While COVID presented many challenges for the team at Recovery Camp, it also allowed them to pivot and change direction. Since they were unable to run camps last year they have developed a full schedule of brand new programs to assist in recovery of people living with mental health conditions.

The first program, ‘Becoming Self Determined’ is an online course comprising of a four-part series of interactive online workshops teaching tools to positively impact wellbeing and quality of life.

Based on Self Determination Theory, this course contributes to the recovery of people living with mental health conditions. Topics covered include: empowering decision making, ability to be assertive and self-advocate, a sense of control, relatedness and boundaries, goal setting, and supportive therapeutic skill-building program.

The second program, ‘RC @ Makerspace’ is a collaboration with UOW Makerspace at the Science Centre, a therapeutic recreation for mental health recovery. Over 3 weeks, participants will enjoy social interaction, learn new skills while working towards a completed project to take home. Groups will be guided by a Mental Health Nurse from Recovery Camp and MakerSpace teacher technicians. The UOW Makerspace provides access to a wide range of equipment including a laser cutter, several 3D printers, sewing machine, heat press and general hand and power tools.

Recovery Camp are offering both courses in addition to camps this year. The first intake for both programs starts on 23 February, for more information get in touch with Zoe Hinge, Community Engagement Coordinator, Recovery Camp.
