[box]#feb026[/box]Wollongong-based visual effects and animation studio The Flock has received a NSW Government grant to build a concept and technical solution to overcome the tyranny of distance and costs for film producers worldwide
The Flock is a resident company in UOW’s iAccelerate innovation incubator, where founder Matt Lynch has used the iAccelerate Start program to build a concept that uses could-based computing technology to support film production studios anywhere in the world.
The Flock has received a $15,000 Innovate NSW Minimum Viable Product (MVP) grant. The grant is designed to help technology enterprises to demonstrate an idea, prove a concept, develop a prototype or customise a solution that addresses a compelling need in key sector of the NSW economy.
Matt Lynch is a 20-year industry veteran who has worked with some of big names in the film industry including George Lucas' company Industrial Light & Magic as well as on many high profile films, such as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Marvel’s The Avengers.
The MVP grant will enable Matt to test The Flock’s innovative solution to the current challenges experienced in visual effects production in the film industry.
The Flock’s game-changing approach to the creation of high-end visual effects and animation involves a technical workflow system using cloud computing networks, providing its team the flexibility to work on any size project, anywhere in the world depending on the project's needs.
“Traditionally, setting up a visual effects studio on location is a huge expense and the workforce is very transient. The trend currently is that all companies are based in Vancouver, however this will present problems when the dollar goes up and government incentives drop.
“The visual effects service needs to be flexible, to go wherever it is needed. This concept is about using freelance artists and cloud to get parties together, addressing the approach of how to do visual effects for movies in a different way.”
Matt said iAccelerate support was fundamental to the process of applying for the MVP Grant.
“What would have been a one page document when I first set out to apply, turned into a 10-15 page document,” Matt said.
